The First Abandonment

The First Abandonment
A Child's Hope
Tully Hart has spent years waiting for her mother, Cloud, to return and prove that she is loved. When Cloud arrives, Tully believes that the longed-for reunion has finally begun, despite Cloud’s intoxication and her failure to make the child feel secure.
Lost in the Crowd
At the protest, Cloud loses Tully and does not come back for her. A policeman returns the child to Ima Hart, but Tully assumes that she must have done something wrong. That conclusion becomes a lasting emotional pattern: she tries to become impressive and successful in the hope that her mother will eventually be proud of her.

Another Chance
When Cloud returns to Tully Hart’s life, Tully is eager to believe that the move to Snohomish might become a real home. She hides the truth about her mother from Kate Mularkey, claiming that Cloud has cancer, because she is ashamed of the drug use and chaos she sees at home.
Naming the Wound
After Margie Mularkey challenges Tully to tell the truth, Tully explains the repeated disappearances that have defined her childhood. Cloud’s presence is temporary, and Tully knows that another departure is likely, but she continues to want a mother who will stay. The confession makes her friendship with Kate a refuge without making her longing for Cloud disappear.

A Return at the Funeral
After Ima Hart dies, seventeen-year-old Tully is left without a guardian and has to face the funeral largely alone. When Cloud appears, Tully briefly believes her mother has returned because she understands how much her daughter needs her.
The Pattern Repeats
Cloud cannot take responsibility for Tully and disappears again, leaving the teenager to face social services and the prospect of foster care. Tully’s effort to stay connected to her mother meets another refusal, deepening her fear that people leave when she needs them most. The experience makes family seem both essential and dangerously unreliable.

Seeking a Different Ending
After seeing Chad Wiley again and reconsidering the family she lacks, Tully Hart travels west to search for Cloud. She turns the search into a documentary, partly to make a meaningful story and partly because she hopes that treatment and support might let her and her mother start over.
Hope and Another Departure
Tully finds Cloud at a deteriorating mobile home and brings her back to Seattle, briefly imagining that they might become a family. Cloud leaves again, taking Tully’s jewelry and reactivating the childhood wound. The camera records Tully’s humiliation, but the episode also makes her abandonment story visible to a public that recognizes its own pain in hers.
A Tarnished Hope

A Tarnished Hope
Words Without a Shared Past
Tully visits Cloud in the hospital after hearing that her mother has been injured and may have overdosed. She speaks about the life she built and the painful distance between them, while Cloud insists that Tully should stop expecting her to become the mother she needs.
The Necklace That Remains
Cloud says that she cannot be what Tully needs but also admits that Tully breaks her heart. Tully later finds the macaroni necklace she made as a child among Cloud’s belongings, evidence that her mother kept at least one token of their connection. Cloud leaves the hospital again, so the discovery offers neither repair nor certainty, only a small, durable reason not to call their history entirely empty.
